🔶 The New York Times: Iran is the main suspect behind cyberattacks on U.S. water systems
The New York Times reported that U.S. federal officials consider the Iranian government the main suspect for this week’s cyberattacks on water systems in several U.S. states. However, officials have not yet officially announced the source of the attacks.
According to this report, more than 30 water systems in the state of Minnesota were targeted by cyberattacks on Sunday and Monday.
Michigan has also reported similar attacks.
The attacks came after U.S. security agencies warned about the threat posed by Iranian hackers against critical infrastructure.
The FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and several other agencies said in a note last week that hackers linked to the Iranian government targeted water and wastewater systems, as well as operational controls of other parts of critical infrastructure.
Nate George, the mayor of Brainerd in Minnesota, also said in an interview referenced in the report that the FBI is “almost certain” the attackers were Iranian, but for now it is exercising caution in its public announcement.
