🔻Yemen’s army says it carried out “20 airstrikes” against Houthi positions in Taiz
The Yemeni government’s military spokesperson announced that the country’s fighter jets carried out 20 airstrikes today against Houthi positions and forces, as well as the group’s vehicles and military equipment in Taiz.
The strikes were carried out as fighting between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthis has reached its highest level since a ceasefire supported by the United Nations in 2022.
That ceasefire had largely halted cross-border attacks.
If the Houthis gain full control of Taiz in the southwest of Yemen, the group would increase its influence over the Red Sea coasts and would gain easier access to southern Yemen and the port city of Aden, the headquarters of the government.
The resumption of fighting so far has caused the displacement of tens of thousands of people and could change the situation in terms of control over different areas of Yemen, with consequences as well for Red Sea shipping routes and the Bab al-Mandab strait.
