🔶 Iraqi: Agreement with Oman on a temporary route in the Strait of Hormuz is close

Abbas Araghchi, foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, said in a press conference held by the president with reporters on the occasion of Journalists’ Day that negotiations between Tehran and Muscat on the legal mechanism and management of the Strait of Hormuz are ongoing and that the two sides are “very close” to reaching an agreement.

Araghchi added that negotiations between Iran and Oman are underway to determine a temporary route for transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

He explained that in the past there was a specific route for the passage of ships, but in the view of the Islamic Republic that route is no longer acceptable for the passage of ships.

The Iranian foreign minister said that a new route needs to be considered, but setting such a route comes with extensive technical and legal complexities.

Araghchi explained that before arriving at the new route, a temporary route will be considered, which will serve as the basis for the main route of the future.

According to him, the Iranian and Omani military and naval forces have negotiated on the basis of existing maps on this issue, and with the compilation of the results of these negotiations, the new route will be determined.
