Mairead Sautó, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, called for a halt to the implementation of executions in Iran until this punishment is fully abolished.

In a post on X, marking two years since the start of her mandate in this role, Sautó wrote: “From the very beginning, I have closely followed the use of the death penalty in Iran, and now, more than at any time before, the necessity of halting executions until this punishment is fully abolished is felt.”

She announced that from Tuesday until 17 Mehr, on the International Day against the Death Penalty, she will provide daily updates about cases related to the death penalty that she has raised with officials of the Islamic Republic.

Sautó added that in many cases, people sentenced to death in Iran were condemned to this punishment after proceedings that, according to her, are “very far” from the international standards of fair trial.
