🔶 Turkey declares readiness to determine maritime borders with Egypt

The Turkish Ministry of Defense said that Ankara is ready to sign an agreement with Egypt to determine the maritime borders of the two countries; an agreement, according to Turkish officials, that could expand Egypt’s maritime area.

A Defense Ministry official told reporters on Wednesday, October 28, that Ankara confirms its readiness to sign an agreement with Cairo based on the mutual interests of the two countries, and added that if such an agreement is signed, Egypt could benefit from a disputed maritime area of more than 15,000 square kilometers, compared with a possible agreement with Greece.

The remarks were made after the Libyan House of Representatives approved a gas deal between Turkey and the Libyan National Unity Government headed by Abdulhamid Dbeibeh.

The deal would allow Turkey to carry out energy resource exploration in parts of the eastern Mediterranean Sea where Greece and Cyprus also claim maritime rights.

The dispute is part of a broader disagreement over the demarcation of maritime borders and the exploitation of energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean.
