🔻The Taliban celebrates its fifth year back in power in Afghanistan; an event that coincided with the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. forces and its allies from that country.
Kabul has been decorated with flags, and ceremonies and a parade are scheduled to be held on the occasion. However, only Russia recognizes the Taliban government, and international sanctions are still in place.
Restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan also remain severe. They are barred from attending many public places and from working in most jobs, and the education of girls beyond the age of 12 is also prohibited.
The UN Special Envoy for Women in Afghanistan has asked the countries providing support not to cut the budgets for special women’s programs and warned that such an action would further increase the suffering of Afghan women.
