France reports first human case of Shamonda virus in patient who died

One person has died in France after contracting the Shamoda virus, an insect-borne disease affecting livestock.

The patient was found to have been infected with the virus before he died in early October in a hospice in Lyon. He was reportedly already suffering from serious illness.

The death marks the first time a human has been recorded to have caught - and died - from the virus, which was previously thought to be non-transmissible.

France's agricultural department has said they see no health risk to the general population at this stage.
