🔶 The cost of illness in Germany has passed half a trillion euros

The costs related to treatment, care, prevention, and rehabilitation in Germany for the first time have exceeded the threshold of half a trillion euros, becoming one of the biggest financial pressures on the country’s health system.

Germany’s Federal Statistical Office announced that the direct cost of illness in the country in 2024 reached €528.5 billion. This figure represents a 7.6% increase compared to the previous year. This calculation includes costs related to medical treatment, care, prevention, and rehabilitation, but does not include indirect consequences such as absence from work or reduced productivity.

Based on these figures, the per-capita cost of illness for each German citizen has reached €6,330 per year.

The statistics show that there is a significant difference between the costs of illness for women and men.

The per-capita cost for women was €6,960, while the figure for men was reported as €5,680. Accordingly, the per-capita cost of illness for women was 22.5% higher than for men. Germany’s Federal Statistical Office says the main reason for this difference is women’s higher life expectancy and women’s greater share in age groups that are elderly and very elderly. Costs related to pregnancy and childbirth also play a role in this difference.
