The attacker of Salman Rushdie was found guilty for “committing a terrorist act”

🔸A federal court jury in the United States on Wednesday, the 7th of Mordad, found Hadi Matar, the attacker of Salman Rushdie, the British-American writer, guilty of “terroristic act” in the bloody attack in 2022.

🔸In a statement by the U.S. Department of Justice, citing federal prosecutors, it was stated that Matar, 28, a Lebanese-American citizen, had planned the attack on Rushdie for months.

🔸In this attack, Rushdie was stabbed repeatedly at a cultural center in the state of New York, going to the brink of death and losing the sight in one of his eyes.

🔸Matar was also convicted for supporting Lebanon’s Hezbollah. According to the prosecutors, investigators found materials related to this Iran-backed group in his home. The United States designates Lebanon’s Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

🔸The prosecution said that Matar followed a fatwa by Ruhollah Khomeini for the killing of Rushdie; a fatwa that was issued in 1989 after the publication of the novel “The Satanic Verses” and was later also endorsed by Ali Khamenei and Hassan Nasrallah.

🔸Matar had previously been found guilty in a New York state court for the attempted murder of Rushdie and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was also sentenced to seven years in prison for injuring a man who was on stage with this writer.

🔸Now, in the federal case, with this new ruling, Matar faces the possibility of life imprisonment. His final sentence is set to be issued on November 3, less than four months from now.
