🔶 South Korea dispatches a naval security unit to waters near the Strait of Hormuz

South Korea’s Ministry of Defense said on Thursday, November 5 (Aban 14), that as part of a mission to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, it will send maritime patrol aircraft and an explosive ordnance neutralization team to waters near the area.

The news comes at a time when Seoul continues to emphasize that it will not send a force for military intervention in the Iran war, but at the same time it is trying to protect commercial shipping through this strategic maritime passage.

Confirming reports published in this regard, a spokesperson for South Korea’s Ministry of Defense said the government intends to expand the operational area of the anti-piracy naval unit “Cheonghae.”

According to him, the unit, which is tasked with protecting commercial ships in the Gulf of Aden, near the coasts of Somalia, is expected to expand its activities to waters near the Strait of Hormuz as well.

In this connection, the Yonhap news agency reported that the deployment will include a destroyer, a P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, an explosive ordnance neutralization team, unmanned surface vessels, unmanned underwater vehicles, and remote-controlled vehicles for underwater exploration.
