In short

To start freelancing online, choose a marketable skill, build a portfolio, then win clients directly or through a marketplace such as Upwork, which charges freelancers 0% to 15% per contract [1]. Price your work after fees, use escrow or written contracts, and register for tax: US self-employment tax is 15.3% [9]. Sanctions bar some countries, including Iran [2][6].

Key takeaways

  1. Upwork's freelancer service fee has ranged from 0% to 15% per contract since May 2025, fixed when the contract starts [1][3].
  2. Fiverr's marketplace take rate, its combined commission from buyers and sellers, was 27.7% in 2025 [5].
  3. Set rates after fees: on Upwork, a freelancer who wants $20 an hour net at a 10% fee charges $22.22 [1].
  4. US freelancers with $400 or more in net self-employment earnings must pay 15.3% self-employment tax [9].
  5. Upwork's terms exclude people located in areas under US sanctions, and US rules ban importing Iranian-origin services [2][6].
  6. Demand is shifting: Upwork's active clients fell 10% in the year to 30 September 2026, which it partly linked to AI [4].

How do you start freelancing online?

Freelancing means selling your skills to clients project by project, as an independent business rather than an employee. The basic steps are the same whichever platform you use. This is general information, not financial, tax or legal advice.

  1. Pick a service you can deliver well. Writing, design, software development, translation, video editing and data work are common categories. Narrow, clearly described services are easier to sell.
  2. Build proof of skill. A portfolio of real samples matters more than a long profile. Upwork's annual report describes expertise as a critical factor in building trust and giving clients confidence to hire [3].
  3. Choose how to find clients. You can use a marketplace, approach clients directly, or both. Marketplaces bring traffic and payment protection but take a fee [1][3].
  4. Price after fees. Work out what you need to earn, then add the platform fee on top, as in the example below [1].
  5. Protect payment. Use the platform's escrow [3], or agree scope, price and payment terms in writing with direct clients.
  6. Register for tax. In the UK you must register for Self Assessment as a sole trader if you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year [11]; in the US, self-employment tax applies from $400 of net earnings [9].

How do freelance marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr work?

A freelance marketplace matches clients with independent workers and handles contracts and payment. Upwork reports customers in over 180 countries and $4.0 billion of gross services volume (GSV), the total value transacted on its platforms, in 2025 [3]. Freelancers on Upwork bid for jobs using Connects, virtual tokens that must be bought to submit proposals [3]. Upwork also offers escrow, approval workflows and dispute resolution so that clients pay for completed work and freelancers are paid on time; its escrow arm is licensed as an internet escrow agent in California [3].

Fiverr works the other way round: sellers list services, called Gigs, that buyers order [5]. Fiverr reported marketplace gross merchandise value (GMV) of $1,073.0 million in 2025, down 2.2% on 2024 [5]. Both buyers and sellers pay Fiverr a commission on each completed transaction [5].

Marketplace or direct clients?

Marketplaces bring clients to you and add payment protection, at the price of fees [1][3][5]. Direct clients mean no platform fee, but you handle contracts, invoicing and collection yourself, and you need to watch for payment scams yourself [12].

What fees do freelance platforms charge?

Since May 2025, Upwork has charged a variable freelancer service fee on new contracts of 0% to 15% of earnings, set by supply and demand factors such as project type, job availability and client demand [3]. Upwork's help centre says the fee is shown before you send a proposal or accept an offer, and that once a contract begins the fee is fixed [1]. Contracts formed before May 2025 keep a flat 10% fee [3].

Clients pay too. Upwork charges a client marketplace fee of 5% on each transaction, or 3% for eligible clients paying by ACH bank transfer; its Business Plus plan carries a 10% fee, or 8% by ACH [3]. Freelancers working with Enterprise clients typically pay a 10% service fee, although the exact rate depends on the terms agreed with that client [1].

A useful overall measure is the take rate, the share of transaction value a platform keeps as revenue. Upwork's marketplace take rate was 18.7% in 2025 [3] and 20.0% in the third quarter of 2026 [4]. Fiverr's marketplace take rate was 27.7% in 2025, against 27.6% in 2024 [5].

How do you set a rate after platform fees?

Upwork publishes a worked example. A freelancer who wants to take home $20 an hour after a 10% service fee should charge $22.22 an hour [1]. For 12 hours, the client is charged $266.64; the 10% fee is $26.66 after rounding, and the freelancer's net earnings are $239.98, two cents less than the $240 estimate [1].

The general rule is: rate to charge = target net rate / (1 - fee). At a 15% fee, a $20 net target becomes about $23.53 an hour; at 0%, it stays at $20. Remember to set aside money for tax and for any currency conversion charges on withdrawal [2][9].

How do freelancers get paid internationally?

On Upwork, client payments go into an escrow account, the service fee is deducted, and the balance is released to the freelancer, who can then withdraw it [2]. If a freelancer withdraws in a currency other than US dollars, Upwork's payment escrow arm imposes a foreign currency conversion charge, and its terms note that a bank may offer a better rate [2].

Sanctions can stop payments. Upwork's terms say that if a freelancer outside the United States cannot withdraw funds because of economic sanctions applicable to Upwork or its payment partners, or because partners refuse to serve certain areas, Upwork will suspend automatic disbursement and hold the funds in an escrow or other suitable account [2].

Direct clients

With direct clients, freelancers usually invoice and receive a bank transfer or a payment through an online payment service. Watch for a classic fraud: the FTC warns that no honest employer will send a check to deposit and then ask you to send part of the money back, because the check will bounce and the bank will want the money repaid [12].

What taxes do freelancers pay?

United States

The IRS sets the self-employment tax rate at 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare [9]. It applies if net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more, and is calculated on Schedule SE; for 2026, the Social Security part applies to the first $184,500 of combined wages, tips and net earnings [9]. Payment apps and online marketplaces issue Form 1099-K when payments exceed $20,000 in more than 200 transactions, but the IRS says you must report income whether or not you receive the form [10].

United Kingdom

GOV.UK says you must register for Self Assessment as a sole trader if you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year, which runs from 6 April to 5 April [11].

Other countries have their own rules, and cross-border income can raise questions about where tax is due. Check with your national tax authority.

Can freelancers in Iran use international platforms?

Access is restricted by US sanctions. The Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations (31 CFR Part 560), administered by the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), govern the Iran program [7]. Section 560.201 prohibits the importation into the United States of any goods or services of Iranian origin, except as otherwise authorised [6]. In practice this affects US clients and US-based platforms paying for work done in Iran.

Platform terms reflect this. Upwork's terms make ineligible anyone who is a citizen or resident of, or located in, an area subject to US or other countries' sanctions or embargoes, and its software terms name Iran among embargoed countries [2]. Upwork's 2025 annual report says it uses controls designed to stop its platforms from facilitating business in sanctioned countries and regions [3].

Crypto is not a clean workaround. Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, lists Iran as a Prohibited Jurisdiction and reserves the right to freeze tokens [8]. OFAC issues and amends general licences from time to time, most recently General License FF-1, a wind-down licence concerning a single bank, on 29 October 2026 [7], so check OFAC's page for current rules and seek qualified legal advice; misstating your location breaches platform terms [2].

What are the risks of freelancing online?

Benefits. Freelancers choose their clients and hours and can sell to buyers worldwide; Upwork alone reports customers in over 180 countries [3]. Marketplaces add escrow and dispute resolution [3].

Risks.

  • Falling demand in some categories. Upwork's GSV fell 10% in the third quarter of 2026, and its active clients fell 10% in the year to 30 September 2026; the company cited lower client acquisition and retention and the evolving impact of AI on certain categories of freelance work [4]. Fiverr also reported that AI adoption is driving a diverging trend between high- and low-skilled services [5].
  • Platforms keep a growing share. Upwork's marketplace take rate rose to 20.0% in the third quarter of 2026, from 18.9% a year earlier [4].
  • Scams. The FTC says honest employers never ask you to pay to get a job, and that offers promising big earnings for little work are almost certainly scams [12].
  • Payment blocks. Sanctions or partner restrictions can freeze withdrawals [2].

What is the outlook for online freelancing?

The platforms are changing how they charge. Upwork expects its marketplace take rate to keep rising through the rest of 2026, driven by ads, its Business Plus plan and wider use of variable fees [4]. At the same time, Upwork's active clients fell 10% while GSV per active client rose 8% in the year to 30 September 2026 [4]. On this guide's reading, that favours specialised, higher-skill services and careful pricing after fees.

Common mistakes

  • Quoting a rate without allowing for the platform fee.

Fix: Divide your target net rate by one minus the fee, as Upwork's own example shows [1].

  • Assuming no tax form means no tax.

Fix: The IRS says income must be reported whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K [10].

  • Depositing a client's check and sending part of it back.

Fix: This is a known scam; the check will bounce and you will owe the bank [12].

  • Misstating your location to open a platform account.

Fix: It breaches terms, and sanctions can lead to held funds; check eligibility first [2].

  • Ignoring currency conversion costs.

Fix: Compare the platform's conversion charge with your bank's rate before withdrawing [2].
