🔶 Kaya Kalas’ phone call with Abbas Araqchi
Kaya Kalas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, reported on a phone call with Abbas Araqchi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, by posting a message on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He wrote that, during this call, he discussed the situation in the Persian Gulf and also Russia’s war in Ukraine, which has intensified in recent days.
In his post, Kalas specified: “In the Persian Gulf, a halt in the fighting could provide an opportunity for mediators to find a way back to diplomacy and prevent a return to full-scale war.”
The EU foreign policy chief also condemned the brief detention of two French diplomats in Iran, calling it “unacceptable.” He added that all EU member countries condemned the action.
In his post, Kalas also addressed recent tensions between Tehran and Kyiv and expressed satisfaction that Andriy Sybikha has discussed de-escalation with his Iranian counterpart.
He further said that, in his call with Araqchi, he urged him to end Tehran’s military support for Moscow in Russia’s war in Ukraine.
