🔻Israeli President Isaac Herzog is set to begin two-day consultations to decide on forming a new government.
Mr. Herzog will have to decide which party leader he should give the opportunity first to form the government.
In last week’s parliamentary elections in Israel, the right-wing Likud Party led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot were unable to secure a majority of the seats in the parliament, the Knesset.
In these elections, Mr. Netanyahu’s coalition, made up of right-wing and far-right parties and fundamentalist Jews, won 53 Knesset seats, while the opposition coalition led by Gadi Eisenkot won 48 seats.
But the Arab and Palestinian parties in Israel achieved the most unprecedented result, winning 19 Knesset seats with high voter turnout.
Isaac Herzog’s office has said that he will first consult with smaller parties and, later tomorrow, Thursday, will meet with the leaders of the two larger parties.
After Mr. Herzog chooses a person to form a cabinet, that person will have 28 days to do so.
