Donald Trump, the US president, rejected reports about Washington’s proposal to reduce sanctions imposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran in exchange for steps by Tehran regarding its nuclear program.
Trump said on Truth Social: “I have not offered Iran the cancellation of sanctions.”
He also rejected reports that, in exchange for nuclear concessions from Tehran, he had offered the Islamic Republic a reduction in sanctions and the release of Iran’s frozen assets, saying: “That’s not right. I didn’t offer them anything.”
Trump’s remarks came a few hours after a report by Axios was published.
Axios, citing US officials, had written that Trump “is prepared to agree to reductions in Iran’s sanctions and the release of the country’s frozen assets in exchange for specific steps by Iran regarding its nuclear program.”
In his remarks, Trump did not provide further details about the Axios report or the possible conditions for negotiations with the Islamic Republic.
