🔻The head of the UN human rights office urged the U.S. state of Tennessee not to carry out further action toward the execution of a woman who survived two attempts at execution by lethal injection.

Volker Türk said that the physical and psychological suffering caused by these failed executions is “disgusting and cruel.”

Krista Pike, who was sentenced to death for murder 30 years ago, was taken to hospital after the injection attempt failed; her physical condition is unknown.

According to Ms. Pike’s lawyer, after her heart continued to beat despite the injection of two doses of a lethal substance, she was transferred to the hospital.

One of her lawyers told the BBC that 50-year-old Pike, after receiving injections of two syringes containing the drug “pentobarbital” on Wednesday, was placed in the hospital under life-saving measures.

Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slimmer. The Tennessee Department of Corrections said it stands by all actions taken during the attempt to carry out Pike’s death sentence.
