🔻The woman who was due to be executed in the United States for a murder she committed three decades ago survived after receiving two doses of lethal substances in a prison in Nashville, in the state of Tennessee.
Krista Pike’s lawyer says she has been taken to a hospital.
One of her attorneys told the BBC that the 50-year-old Ms. Pike was put in the hospital “under life-saving measures” after the injection of two syringes of pentobarbital.
Witnesses reported that they could still hear the sound of the woman’s breathing before officers removed them from the execution site.
The execution was carried out after the US Supreme Court overturned a temporary stay issued a few hours earlier by a lower court.
That court had temporarily halted the execution in order to examine whether Krista Pike’s claims of sexual abuse during childhood—before the death sentence was handed down—had been fully considered.
