🔶 U.S. Congress election; Democrats’ hopes to defeat Republicans

The U.S. midterm elections for Congress will be held on Tuesday, 12 Aban (3 November). All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats out of 100 in the Senate will be decided by vote. Republicans currently hold a majority in both chambers.

Democrats hope to take control of both chambers of Congress back from Republicans in order to limit the scope of power and action of Donald Trump during the second half of his second presidential term. If Democrats win, they can halt the approval of new financial resources in Congress and form investigative committees. Trump, for his part, can also regularly veto Democrats’ bills.

Experts say Democrats are likely to gain more seats, because, according to them, many voters are dissatisfied with Trump’s policies, rising cost of living, and the conflict with Iran.

The first probable election results are expected to be announced early on Wednesday, 4 November. If the race is tight and close, determining the winning party in the House of Representatives and the Senate may take several days.

These elections are a test for measuring how satisfied the public is with the performance of the Trump administration.

New governors are also scheduled to be elected in 36 states. Voters in California will also decide on the issue of taxing the income of the wealthy, and citizens of the state of Idaho and three other states will vote on abortion regulations.

Kluwer Ashbrook, an expert on U.S. affairs at the “Bertelsmann Foundation,” citing the latest polls, has considered the Democrats’ victory in the House of Representatives to be likely. In an interview with Germany’s national radio station “Deutschlandfunk,” he said the race for Senate seats will be very tight and its outcome will most likely be determined only after the final votes have been counted.
