🔶 Israel’s request to the Lebanese government to prevent Hezbollah from entering a possible war with Iran
Israel’s Channel 12 television network, citing a security official in the country, reported that Tel Aviv has asked the Lebanese government to prevent Hezbollah from entering confrontations in the event of a resumption of war with Iran.
According to the report, Israel conveyed this message to Beirut through American mediators and asked the Lebanese government to deploy the country’s army forces to set up checkpoints in areas where Hezbollah forces operate, so that if war with Iran is resumed, the joining of troops from this Tehran-supported paramilitary group in the fighting can be prevented.
The security official said that Israel also warned that if Hezbollah forces resume activity in a possible war with Iran, fighting in Lebanon would also be renewed.
It is not clear why Israel conveyed this message to Beirut through U.S. officials rather than contacting the Lebanese government directly. This comes while the two sides have recently held direct talks, with U.S. support, aimed at implementing a framework agreement for the disarmament of Hezbollah and the gradual withdrawal of Israel’s army forces from southern Lebanon.
During the 40-day war by Hezbollah in support of Tehran, Lebanon was drawn into Israel’s and America’s war with Iran. Hezbollah’s rocket fire into Lebanon was met with extensive Israeli airstrikes, and Israeli army ground forces entered southern Lebanon. In June, an agreement was reached to end the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel, but even so, sporadic clashes have continued.
