U.S. administration expresses hope for announcing an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman by Wednesday

🔸As talks between Iran and Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz continue, U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration said on Tuesday, August 13, that an agreement to open this strategic waterway could be finalized by Wednesday.

🔸This comes as oil prices have fallen and the U.S. military says the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz is open.

🔸On Tuesday, Scott Bessent told CNBC: “We are negotiating with the Iranians, and I think there is a possibility that we could reach an agreement today or tomorrow to reopen the strait and move toward a more normal situation in this confrontation.”

🔸In response to a question about whether such an agreement would allow Iran to charge fees for passing ships, he said: “I think what’s meant is freedom of passage.”

🔸Monday, Trump had said from the White House that negotiations with Iran were underway to open the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday. He said: “This is their last chance to sign a good deal, otherwise their heads will be cut off.”

🔸U.S. Secretary of State also announced an hour or so after Bessent’s remarks that talks and negotiations between Iran and Oman are ongoing, in which we are also involved, about how more ships can transit the Strait of Hormuz with security in the short term.

🔸At the signing ceremony of a nuclear memorandum of understanding with Paraguay, Marco Rubio said that “ships are going through the strait. Oil is going through the strait right now. The straits are open.”

🔸He said, noting that “the nuclear disarmament of Iran is the final and main agreement,” adding that, however, the immediate agreement that has received a lot of attention is about the straits.
