🔶 The Wall Street Journal: Iran rejects Oman’s plan for the Strait of Hormuz

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Islamic Republic has rejected Oman’s proposed plan to divide control of the Strait of Hormuz equally between the two countries.

According to the report, Kاظم Gharibabadi, deputy foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, said that Tehran would only move to the next stage of talks with the United States if control of most of the Strait of Hormuz were handed over to Iran. He added that Oman’s plan “does not address Iran’s security concerns.

As written by The Wall Street Journal, mediators of the negotiations believe that Iran’s refusal of this proposal has thrown a wrench into efforts to advance an initial agreement between Tehran and Washington.

The news comes as Reuters had previously reported that, with support from Gulf countries, Oman has proposed a plan for managing the Strait of Hormuz under which control of the waterway would be carried out jointly and with a 50-50 split between Iran and Oman, and that navigation services fees would also be collected voluntarily.
