Reuters reports that China has held direct talks with the Houthis in Yemen so that its oil tankers can pass through the southern part of the Red Sea without being targeted.

The move comes after the Iran-aligned militants threatened to prevent access to ports in Saudi Arabia.

The Houthis announced their blockade on July 20, thereby opening a new front against the United States and its allies in the Iran war. At the same time, they expanded their attacks on oil tankers and other vessels that transport energy and other goods to markets outside the Middle East.

Through email, the Houthis informed international shipping companies that if ships carry out loading or unloading operations in Saudi ports, they may be attacked.

As Reuters wrote, Beijing is trying to preserve oil exports from Saudi terminals in the Red Sea, especially Yanbu, to make up for shortages caused by Iran’s operational blocking of the Strait of Hormuz at the exit from the Persian Gulf.
