The Times of Israel, citing informed sources, wrote that Donald Trump, the president of the United States, no longer has any interest in renewing the previous interim understanding with the Islamic Republic and instead prefers to obtain more favorable conditions to end the war by applying economic pressure.

An American official, who spoke with The Times of Israel on Thursday, said Trump believes that sanctions will make the Iranian government yield to more favorable U.S. conditions for limiting its nuclear program and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

A senior diplomat from one of the mediating countries also said Trump is no longer interested in reviving the June agreement; an agreement that fell apart only a few days later amid differences over this strategic waterway.

The diplomat said that mediators—namely Qatar and Pakistan—have tried to restore the agreement or negotiate a similar one, but Trump has told them that he is no longer willing to accept those terms because, according to the diplomat, the Iranians have repeatedly “burned” him at the last moment and backed out of the deal.
