According to accounts published by students of the University of Tehran, at the same time as the start of the new academic year, the actions of security officers against students—especially girls—over compulsory hijab have been intensified.
Students have reported that security officers have increased pressure through threats, humiliation, confiscation of student cards, and preventing some students from entering the university. Reports have also been published of physical برخورد (assault) with a student at the entrance on 16 Azar Street.
In recent weeks, motorcycle patrols of the Hijab Watch have been operating at the central campus of the University of Tehran, and working groups titled “Hijab” and “Review of Cultural Abnormalities” have also been formed under the supervision of Hussein Omid, the president of the University of Tehran.
According to students, these measures, in addition to limiting their presence on campus, have also put students’ psychological and physical security at risk.
