In response to a question about the likelihood of an attack on internet cables in the Persian Gulf, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic did not rule out the possibility and said that the armed forces in practice will show how they will confound the enemy.
Ismail Baqaei said in a weekly press conference on Monday that over the past eight months important experiences have been gained, which will be put to use going forward.
He claimed that the Islamic Republic has always been bound by international law and, unlike the other side, in its military response it takes international humanitarian law into consideration. Baqaei did not provide examples for this claim and left its determination to military officials.
This is the first official reaction from the Foreign Ministry to a set of threats regarding communication infrastructure in the Persian Gulf.
Yadollah Javani, political deputy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ General Command, on Mehr 29 (October 20), warned in an interview with the Arabic-language Al-Alam network that if the United States and its allies attack Iran’s infrastructure, the undersea internet cables in the Strait of Hormuz could become targets.
