🔶 Number of unemployed in Germany’s engineering jobs breaks record

According to the latest statistics from the Association of German Engineers (VDI), the number of unemployed people in engineering and information technology jobs has reached its highest level in this country since the start of this data collection in 2011.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, an average of 58,392 people were looking for work in engineering or informatics fields. Compared with the same period last year, this figure indicates a 16.7% increase in unemployment and represents the highest level since the start of publishing the “Engineering Status Monitoring” (Ingenieurmonitor) in 2011.

Of course, in terms of the number of unemployed, significant differences are seen among various fields. Unemployment in civil engineering jobs has increased by only 5.8% compared with the previous year, but in engineering jobs for technical research and production control, this increase has reached 32.9%. In addition, in mechanical engineering and automotive engineering jobs, unemployment has increased by 34%.
