Despite the celebrations for the 251st anniversary of the founding of the United States, the wedding of Taylor Swift, and the World Cup of football, Americans may perhaps be forgiven for having overlooked some important issues this summer.

But signs of economic trouble had been appearing for some time. This week, these concerns made the headlines as the national debt of the United States crossed the threshold of 40 trillion dollars; a figure that has raised concerns both inside the United States and abroad.
