Meta, the parent company and owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, is facing its largest fine in history due to its business practices.

On Wednesday, a judge in the U.S. state of New Mexico ordered Meta to pay a $25 billion fine after a two-week trial earlier this year. The trial found that, over the years, the company has “lied” to the public about how it manages information from Facebook users.

In this case, the judge said: “These lies go beyond the data management practices of Facebook users,” adding that these actions “relate to the core of the central elements of Facebook’s main business practices.”

CJ Mahoney, Meta’s senior lawyer, said the ruling would effectively make doing business in New Mexico “almost impossible.” He added that the company intends to appeal the verdict and predicted that it would succeed in the appeal.
