🔻Krista Pike, sentenced to death, survives an unsuccessful execution attempt and returns to prison
Krista Pike, a prisoner on death row in the U.S. state of Tennessee, was released from the hospital on Saturday and returned to prison after surviving an unsuccessful attempt to carry out her sentence last month.
Her lawyers said Pike is now being held at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center; the same facility where she has been incarcerated for more than 30 years, and where her medical treatment is expected to continue.
Pike, 50, was sentenced to death for a killing in 1995. Her lawyers said that after she regained consciousness in the hospital, she was “angry and confused,” and that she faces a long recovery.
After the unsuccessful execution attempt on September 30, she was transferred to a hospital in Nashville while unconscious and in critical condition. According to her lawyers, two injections failed to kill her, and she was also severely injured on her hands.
A judge in Tennessee ordered this week that all evidence related to the unsuccessful execution attempt, including the devices and materials used, be preserved.
Tennessee’s governor has also halted all executions until the end of the year in order to investigate Pike’s case of an unsuccessful execution attempt and another similar case in May.
