46 countries, in a joint statement, condemned the continuation of the execution of opponents and protesters in Iran

🔸Forty-six countries around the world, in a joint statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council, condemned the continuation of executions and the increased incidence of the issuance and implementation of this punishment in Iran.

🔸The signatories, in particular, expressed deep concern about the execution process of detainees from the protests of last December.

🔸The statement was read on Wednesday, October 8 of Mehr by Daniel Batliner, the representative of Liechtenstein. It was signed by all members of the European Union except Poland, together with 20 other countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Ukraine, and Switzerland.

🔸The statement emphasized that «no one should be subjected to execution for exercising fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, or for seeking to have their voice heard.»

🔸The signatories, referring to findings and reports by experts of the United Nations, including the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, emphasized that the Islamic Republic’s resort to executing protesters is carried out with the aim of «spreading fear and intimidation in society, suppressing and silencing opponents, and preventing peaceful gatherings and freedom of expression.»

🔸The authors also expressed serious concern about the lack of fair trials in accordance with international standards, the use of torture to obtain forced confessions, and the enforced disappearance of opponents. They asked Iran to stop all of these actions without delay, and in particular to halt the execution of protesters.
