🔻G20 foreign ministers meeting in the shadow of the Iran-Ukraine war
🔻A meeting of the G20 foreign ministers is scheduled to be held today in Atlanta, Georgia.
The meeting will take place just a few days before America’s consequential midterm elections, and Marco Rubio, the U.S. secretary of state, will host his G20 counterparts, including Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister.
The meeting is being held at a time when negotiations are expected to involve serious disagreements. The wars in Ukraine and Iran and the sharp rise in energy prices have intensified tensions between countries.
The G20 meeting—which brings together major economies such as China, India, Russia, Japan, Germany, and France—is not expected to produce significant achievements; because disagreements over Russia’s war against Ukraine and the repercussions of the conflict involving Iran remain unresolved.
The Trump administration, which is set to hand over the G20’s rotating chair to Britain, believes that this body has moved away from its core mission.
Washington has promised to return the G20 to its main objective—strengthening economic growth—and argues that security and economic prosperity are inextricably linked.
