🔶 European support for Ukraine alongside reduced U.S. aid; Kyiv’s concern about winter and a financial crisis

European Union leaders on Friday, October 16, at a meeting in Brussels, emphasized continuing support for Ukraine in its war against Russia; a position that conflicts with recent policies of Donald Trump, the U.S. president.

Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council, said that this is not the time to reduce support for Ukraine or lift sanctions on Russia, but rather support for Kyiv must be increased and pressure on Moscow intensified. Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, also announced that the sanctions will not be lifted as long as Russia has not ended the war.

This emphasis on supporting Ukraine is taking place at a time when Trump’s unilateral decision to reduce sanctions on Russian oil exports and to buy diesel fuel from Moscow has raised concerns among Kyiv’s European allies.

Washington is also considering reducing sanctions against Russian oil tanker fleets; tankers that move oil outside the framework of international sanctions by turning off their identification systems.
