Bloomberg, on Thursday, 9 Mehr, citing informed sources, reported that Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, during his private meetings in New York, proposed that access for IAEA inspectors to nuclear facilities that were bombed during the war be established in exchange for a reduction in sanctions.
According to diplomats familiar with these talks, Araghchi raised this proposal in a meeting with European and Middle Eastern officials on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. These people, because the negotiations were private, did not want their names disclosed.
Bloomberg wrote that in these meetings, Araghchi did not provide much information about Iran’s economic situation in the wake of sanctions and the U.S. naval blockade, but the proposal to allow inspectors in exchange for a reduction in sanctions, according to diplomats, could be a sign of the economic pressure brought to bear on the Islamic Republic.
Four informed sources also told Bloomberg that Araghchi asked European countries to revoke last year’s decision to reinstate UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic. European officials have so far refused this request.
