🔶 Bessent announced “unprecedented” economic measures by the United States against Iran

Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, announced on Thursday, August 13 (July 22), that the United States intends to carry out economic measures against the Islamic Republic and drive Iran into an isolation that would be “unprecedented” in economic history.

In an interview with Newsmax, he said that further details and actions will be published next week.

The U.S. Treasury secretary said in the interview that the policy will be a “combination of severe economic isolation and continued blockade in the Strait of Hormuz”; a blockade, according to his remarks, that will prevent the entry of any goods into Iranian ports or their exit from those ports.

Bessent said this approach will involve applying two levers: increasing financial pressure [on the Islamic Republic] and the practical closure of ports.

The U.S. Treasury secretary did not provide further details about the type of economic measures, the exact time of their implementation, or the institutions and sectors targeted.
