🔻Abdulrahman Seyyed, a leftist figure outside the traditional structure of the party, won the Democratic primary election for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. This result is considered one of the most important victories for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party on the eve of the midterm elections. Mr. Seyyed defeated Hilli Stevens, a moderate member of Congress, by a margin of less than one percent. During the election campaign, he received support from figures such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and entered the race with slogans including universal healthcare, reforming the election campaign finance system, and ending U.S. military aid to Israel.

This race was among the most expensive Democratic primary elections and highlighted the split between the party’s moderate and progressive wings. Support groups for Mr. Stevens, including political action committees, spent tens of millions of dollars to back him, but Abdulrahman Seyyed was able to win by relying on support from progressive and young voters.
