🔻With the escalation of fighting in northern Ethiopia, Eritrea has cut diplomatic ties with the country.
The decision was announced after, on Thursday, the Ethiopian government said it would close its embassy in Asmara, Eritrea’s capital, and ordered 10 Eritrean diplomats to leave Ethiopian soil within 48 hours.
At the same time, the Ethiopian government accused these diplomats of activities that threaten national security.
Eritrea says Ethiopia’s decision to sever diplomatic relations left it with no alternative other than reciprocal action.
The diplomatic tension began hours after reports of several powerful explosions in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, including near an Ethiopian military facility.
Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of supporting a new rebel alliance—an accusation Eritrea has repeatedly denied.
According to state media, Ethiopia also expelled an Egyptian diplomat and gave him 48 hours to leave the country. The Ethiopian government has not provided an official public reason for this decision. 📷Reuters
