🔶 Wildfires in Greece are also flaring up

New wildfires in Greece began yesterday, Friday, July 31 (Mordad 9), and strong winds helped spread them. The country’s fire service said that within 24 hours, 51 new fires had broken out.

According to one of the spokespersons of Greece’s fire service, strong gusts prevent firefighting aircraft from taking on water.

According to Greece’s Civil Protection Authority, in many parts of the country the risk of a wildland fire is “very high.” The island of Crete, the Peloponnese peninsula, and the islands of Paros, Kalymnos, and Andros in the Aegean Sea are among the areas that have faced fires.

The situation is especially critical in western Athens, where flames are spreading along a front several kilometers long. Residents of two areas in western Athens have been asked to leave the area to protect their lives.

In contrast, Turkish officials have said that most major fires in the neighboring country, Greece, have been brought under control.

Ibrahim Yumakli, Turkey’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, said in a message on the social network X that widespread fires have been brought under control in at least five locations in his country.
