The US president called the Houthis’ attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh “horrific” and said he is talking with the Saudi crown prince while also considering joining the war against the Houthis at the same time.
A reporter asked him whether Saudi Arabia can defend itself. Trump replied: “Well, they can defend themselves. Look, the Saudis are good fighters, but I think the attack was something horrific.”
He later said he has not yet spoken with Mohammed bin Salman, but that he will. Trump added: “What happened in Saudi Arabia is unacceptable.”
Trump said the US is reviewing whether to join the war against the Houthis: “Maybe. We’ll look into it. We just learned about the attack, so we decide. We move very quickly.”
Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, said an American citizen was killed in the attack. He wrote on X: “We stand with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its people, and we extend our condolences to the victims and their families.” Rubio called for an end to “these hateful attacks.”
Saudi Arabia’s Civil Aviation Authority said 12 people were killed in the attack and 309 were injured.
