🔶 UN rapporteur Jina Romero joins hunger strike by prisoners in Iran in protest at executions

Jina Paula Romero, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association, has announced that she is joining the “Tuesdays No to Executions” hunger strike campaign in solidarity with prisoners in Iran.

Romero called for the suspension of executions and independent monitoring of the situation of prisoners who are facing death sentences. She also expressed concern about the status of detained protesters and their access to fair trial.

In her statement, Romero said that the death penalty in Iran has been imposed on individuals who have used their rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and political participation.

According to Romero, at least 46 protesters have been executed since March; there are also reports that thousands of people were killed during the protests in Dey 1404.

These figures reflect the assessment announced by Jina Romero and have not been independently verified here.

The “Tuesdays No to Executions” campaign is a protest movement involving prisoners that opposes the death penalty in Iran. Romero said her participation in this campaign is intended to express solidarity with prisoners who put their lives at risk to protest executions.

Mái Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, has also referred to Romero’s remarks and described them as important.

This position-taking increases the scope of international attention and monitoring regarding the implementation of the death penalty in Iran, and once again emphasizes calls for greater transparency, observance of due process, and independent oversight of the cases of those sentenced to death.
