In today’s Iran, justice seems more helpless than ever; after the killings of December 14, 1404, a wave of arrests, prisons, and executions continued, and for many, the law is no longer a refuge for seeking redress—it has become part of a cycle of repression.
Reason, too, seems to be pushed out of the arena of decision-making every day more; the voices of critics, of reasonable people, and of those who care about society have either been silenced or pushed to the margins. The government’s adventurous and tension-creating policies have kept the country away from stable, real peace for years, and the result of all of this is a society that has neither security nor calm, nor the possibility of experiencing natural, untroubled joy and liveliness. It is as if, in the meantime, justice, reason, love, peace, and even joy itself—not just wounded, but purposefully, one by one, removed from the stage of life.
This is what Manna Nistani drew upon in designing the Cartoon of the Week for DW Farsi.
