🔻Trump calls EU plan for Canada “ridiculous”

Donald Trump, the U.S. president, has threatened that he will take action against it if the European Union moves forward with a plan to turn Canada into the bloc’s first “associated” member.

On his way to a trip to North Carolina, Trump told reporters, calling the proposal “ridiculous”: “If this EU decision is made in good faith, there’s no problem, but if the intent is bad, we will impose very heavy tariffs on Europe.”

According to Reuters, the European Commission also said that the proposal by Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, is not considered a hostile act.

Olof Gill, a spokesperson for the European Commission, also said: “As Ms. von der Leyen said clearly yesterday, our proposed strengthening of cooperation with Canada is not against anyone, but in line with strengthening our shared capacity.”

She raised the proposal in her annual address to the European Parliament, where Mark Carney, the prime minister of Canada, was also present.

Following the worsening of her country’s relations with the United States during Donald Trump’s presidency, Canada’s prime minister has sought to strengthen the country’s political and trade ties with other countries.

Meanwhile, the European Commission says that the details of the proposal have not yet been drafted and require approval by EU member countries.
