U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday, in an unprecedented move, that he is barring reporters from three outlets—CNN, MSNB C and Politico—from entering the White House due to what he described as “fake news.”

On Friday, Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Social website that these outlets “constantly write about or report a story or a lie” about his administration, although he provided no examples.

It is not yet clear whether preventing staff from these outlets from entering the White House grounds will be carried out.

CNN reacted quickly to the move and condemned it as an “unlawful attack” on freedom of the press in the United States.

A short time after the news was announced, Trump answered questions from reporters in the Oval Office and said that “others may also join them,” but he did not name any specific news outlets.

He also acknowledged that legal challenges may arise after the announcement and said, “I think it’s good that this is mentioned, whether this action lasts or not.”
