The Washington Post wrote in an editorial that a deal with the Islamic Republic and injecting more financial resources into Tehran would reward the “disruptive” behavior of this government and set the stage for another round of instability. The newspaper urged Donald Trump to halt the negotiations and continue the policy of containing the Islamic Republic.

The Washington Post’s editorial board described the United States’ war against the Islamic Republic as strategically unsuccessful and wrote that this confrontation has neither led to a change of government nor halted Iran’s missile capabilities and the activities of its proxy forces. As the newspaper put it, although Iran’s nuclear program attacks were pushed back, it also increased Tehran’s motivation to obtain nuclear weapons.

The Washington Post also wrote that the previous understandings between Washington and Tehran were unable to resolve the dispute over control of the Strait of Hormuz, and that the resumption of attacks did not change the facts on the ground. Emphasizing the impact of sanctions and a naval blockade on Iran’s economy, the newspaper suggested that instead of a deal, the United States should continue economic pressure, limit oil exports, confront proxy forces, and pursue the policy of containing the Islamic Republic.
