🔻The New York Post reported that Gianni Infantino, the head of FIFA, is seeking, following increasing pressure to step down from his position, support from the U.S. government and is set to take part in a private discussion with Marco Rubio, the U.S. secretary of state, on Monday.

🔹According to the outlet, two informed sources have confirmed that the call is being made while Infantino, after the failure of a controversial plan to transfer part of the World Cup’s commercial rights, has faced a wave of criticism and opposition. One of the sources told the New York Post: “He wants to talk about football’s role as a tool for America’s soft power, but everyone knows that the main purpose of this call is to preserve his position at FIFA.”

🔹The report also added that in recent days, Infantino has tried several times to contact Donald Trump directly, but has not succeeded in speaking with the U.S. president. According to the sources cited by the outlet, the FIFA president, after backing away from the project to hand over part of the World Cup’s commercial rights, feels isolated and is seeking to win support from influential figures.
