The European Union, in a statement, condemned the actions of the security forces of the Islamic Republic against two diplomats of the French embassy in Tehran.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, said that the EU “firmly condemns the violation by security forces of two diplomats of the French embassy in Tehran on July 19,” and added that the action is an “open violation” of the Vienna Conventions and a threat to diplomatic relations.

Earlier, Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s foreign minister, said that the two diplomats of his country were arrested “violently” in a “private location,” and were held for several hours without reason and interrogated, and that one of them had also been assaulted.

On Monday, 5 Mordad, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic announced that it had summoned the French ambassador and added that the two diplomats “interfered in Iran’s domestic affairs under the pretext of engaging with civil society.”
