The death toll from the collision between two passenger trains in central Spain has reached at least 68, and dozens were injured. Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, promised a full investigation into the cause of the accident.

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning, shortly after 9 a.m. local time, on the high-speed rail line Madrid to Andalusia, at kilometer 118 near the station of Oropesa in the province of Toledo. A state-run Renfe train and a private Iryo train—both traveling on the Madrid to Seville route—collided.

Two carriages derailed and fell down the embankment beside the tracks. The railway infrastructure company Adif described the incident as a collision from the rear and halted traffic in both directions.

According to the European Press Agency (EPA), sources at Spain’s Ministry of Transport have called the first hypothesis the Renfe train’s rear-end collision with the Iryo train. Official investigation
