🔻The United Nations said that opium production in Afghanistan has increased significantly despite the Taliban’s ban on poppy cultivation.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime says that the area under poppy cultivation in Afghanistan has increased fourfold compared to last year, and the amount of opium production has also risen fivefold, reaching about 300 tons.
According to the United Nations, this is the first significant increase in opium cultivation and production in Afghanistan since the Taliban imposed its ban in 2022.
The organization says that some impoverished Afghan farmers have turned back to poppy cultivation in order to provide income for their families.
