South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired about 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea off its eastern coasts on Thursday. The launches were carried out from a region near the city of Wonsan.

South Korea’s military strengthened its surveillance, maintained readiness for further launches, and shared information with the United States and Japan.

Japan’s account is more cautious. According to Yonhap, Japan’s Ministry of Defense reported the launch of an object that could be a ballistic missile, which landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

The latest ballistic missile launch by North Korea was on October 11, amid tensions along the border between the two Koreas over a mine explosion that injured several South Korean soldiers last month. North Korea has conducted more than 10 missile tests this year.
