France Press Agency reported that Australia is considering the purchase of interceptor missiles developed for Israel’s “Iron Dome” air defense system; a move carried out as part of Canberra’s efforts to create an air defense shield more quickly.

According to the report, Australian defense officials said in a meeting of a parliamentary committee that, given the rapid changes in the ways of war in Ukraine and the Middle East, the country intends to have a ground-based missile defense system deployed by the early 2030s.

The officials said that options under review include the U.S. Patriot missile defense system and interceptor missiles from the Israeli company Rafael, developed for the Iron Dome system. These missiles are produced with the participation of the U.S. company Raytheon, and have recently been put into use in a new U.S. Marine Corps system as well.

The medium-range interceptor missiles that can be mounted on trucks were tested last June on Guam Island during a regional exercise involving Australia.
