🔻 Qatar’s prime minister: Renewed escalation of fighting to gain more leverage in negotiations will not bring results, Liz Doost, senior international affairs journalist at BBC

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Prime Minister of Qatar, warned that a renewed escalation of military clashes in the Middle East aimed at gaining more leverage in negotiations will not yield any result.

Speaking at the Oxford University debating society, he said that Qatari mediators have traveled to Iran five times in the past week to prevent a further escalation of military conflict. Some of the meetings, he said, lasted between 15 and 20 hours.

The Qatari prime minister described the negotiation process as difficult, but did not go into details. He warned that no peace agreement will ever be flawless, and that people should not expect to reach such an agreement.

However, he still said that reaching a final agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear program, the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and regional security is possible.
