Prisoners of Ward Two of Karaj’s Qزلحصar Prison ended their protest after 16 days of hunger strike and a sit-in in اعتراض to the execution rulings. This followed promises from prison officials and judicial authorities to temporarily halt the executions of convicts in cases related to drug offenses until their requests are reviewed.
Hengaw website, the news outlet of a group of human rights activists in Iran, reported on Tuesday, the sixth of Mordad, that the protesting prisoners have conditionally ended their hunger strike continuation on the implementation of this promise and the authorities’ adherence to the announced commitments.
The hunger strike by these prisoners began on Tir 22, following the transfer of six prisoners sentenced to death in cases related to drug crimes to solitary cells.
Around 1,500 protesting prisoners during this period demanded the suspension of execution rulings by refusing to receive their food rations and staging a sit-in. Some of them also, in a protest action, sewed their lips shut.
The prisoners’ protest at Qزلحصar during the past two weeks was joined with support from the families of death-row convicts, a number of civil and professional organizations, and social media users.
